The Future of Comfood – a Planning Discussion

With 5000+ subscribers, the Comfood email listserv is vital to the community food movement, but we also could use new communications venues.  Join us to discuss ways to improve Comfood and potentially add new services, such as blogs, discussion forums, additional listservs, and even Tweets.  We’ll also need folks to manage any new undertakings.

People of Color Caucus

White Allies Caucus

These two discussions will be facilitated by CFSC board members as part of our deepening commitment to dismantling racism and social justice. The sessions will set up a dialogue circle where participants can share their vision for social justice and dismantling racism in the movement, CFSC and the conference. We will gather in affinity groups so that we may create safe spaces to explore our vision and challenges.

Wondering what it means for a global corporation like Walmart to declare itself socially responsible? Panelists will examine Walmart’s food and sustainability initiatives in the context of its business model, financial, and political strategies. Using Walmart as a case study, participants will explore the implications of corporate philanthropy, self-regulation, and partnerships with public institutions for food justice, food sovereignty, and democracy.

CFSC Policy Committee Meeting

CFSC’s Policy Committee develops policy goals for the coalition, updates members on the latest federal policy happenings affecting the community food security movement, and strategizes on current legislative efforts. Join us to hear what policy staff have been working on in 2011, and to discuss future policy issues affecting community food security, including the 2012 Farm Bill.

US Food Sovereignty Alliance

The US Food Sovereignty Alliance (USFSA) is working to build and re-balance power in the food system and connect the US food movement to the global movement for food sovereignty. Learn about the concept of food sovereignty and the social movements putting it into practice on the ground and in policy. We will discuss how food sovereignty relates to food justice and community food security and specific struggles for food sovereignty in the US.

Food Policy Councils – Building Our Skills for Change

Food policy councils have demonstrated their ability to promote food democracy. As this grass-roots movement has grown and the barriers to change become more evident, it is necessary that we hone our skills. Discussion will focus on the more common challenges facing FPCs, share “lessons learned”, and propose strategies to improve our skills.

Achieving Food Justice: Effective Strategies for Changing Local Policy

This session will allow food justice groups from different cities to compare the political challenges that impede food justice efforts in their respective geographic areas. The International Links Committee works to connect the Coalition to its food security partners around the world through initiatives for food sovereignty, fair trade, and sustainable agriculture. Our goals are to strengthen CFSC’s involvement in broader global movements and to serve as a springboard for collaboration among CFSC members on international issues.

Community Economic Development Committee

Join the first meeting of the newly formed Community Economic Development (CED) Committee! After an introduction to the principles of CED, attendees will exchange stories and insights about new developments – victories you’ve won or obstacles you’ve encountered – as you work with local officials to promote local food as a CED strategy.

The Urban Agriculture Committee works on national policy and disseminates information to community gardeners, urban farmers and other metropolitan growers. We will also discuss legislative strategy related to “community-based agriculture” in the 2012 Farm Bill.
